Research Experience for Undergraduate

Summer 1999 Program

Research Opportunities:

• Each student will work with a faculty mentor, as well as other professors, researchers and graduate students on a research project. Project descriptions for Summer 1999 can be found at

• Research topics include, but are not limited to; condensed matter physics, astrophysics, high energy physics, biophysics and earth science, and include experiment, theory and computational simulations.

Additional activities:

• Students will present their research at a campus wide undergraduate research conference.
• Presentations/seminars by UCSD faculty on a wide range of physics topics
• Information on graduate school and the Physics GRE
• Library research training and paper writing workshops
• Laboratory safety training
• Computer training
• Social events with participants in other campus research programs
• Opportunities to explore the beautiful areas around UCSD

Participants will receive:*

• Stipend of $ 2500
• Complimentary housing accommodations in conveniently located campus apartments
• Travel allowance

• two letters of recommendation (at least one should be from a physics professor)

Application deadlines:

The program uses rolling admissions, complete application packets (transcript, application, letters of recommendation) will be considered as they arrive, and early acceptance is possible. Applications received after March 15^th, 1999 will be considered on a space available basis only.

Approximate program dates: June 21- August 27, 1999

Eligibility:

Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident students who are enrolled in a degree program which leads to a bachelor's degree. Women and students from traditionally underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
