Muons passing through a helium filled chamber leave a path of ionized helium. When a muon is detected a high voltage pulse is applied to the chamber which causes a spark which travels throught the path of the muon. The velocity of the muon can be estimated by the frequency of the pulses. The fact that muons could travel this far in spite of there short lifespan, is evidence of time dilation.
