Floats in Jars

  • Principle Illustrated: Components of Force

  • Two jars, at opposite ends of a beam, have fishing-float s anchored inside them. When the beam is rotated, water tends outward, forcing the floats inward, counter to the expectations of many students. Steel balls suspended below the jars exhibit normal centrifugal behavior.
