A view of the Physics Major from a UCSD Undergraduate Physics Alumnus

Saratoga, California, 29 July 1997

Dear Webmaster,

I am happy to see this web site. I graduated from UCSD Revelle College in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in physics. After completing my degree, I spent 13 years at Intel working in microprocessor manufacturing, design, sales and, finally, marketing. I left Intel to start a software company. I am currently the CEO and president of that company. We develop and market PC applications with an advanced voice user interface. Our development staff consists of 60% physics majors. My logic was that if you can learn physics, you can learn anything.

Physics is one the best majors undergraduate students can choose, if they seek flexibility in their job scope and in their location, as well as on-going financial considerations. I did two senior theses at UCSD: one on space based anti-ballistic missile systems and one on surface-enhanced Raman scattering. These two pieces of work opened many doors for me.

By the way, physics grads with strong programming skills can make $60,000 within two years of graduating, and well over $100,000 in mid-career.
