Physics 1CL
Course Plan
April 1998

The class meets in room 2281, WLH.

Office Hours: Each TA has 1 hour per week. Times and locations are on the www. You may visit any TA.

Makeups: Since many sections are full, it is difficult to makeup a missed lab. You must complete 3 experiments (2,4,5) by the end of week 8, Saturday May 23. No makeups will be possible after that date.
The following makeup sections are scheduled, in weeks 6 and 8 only:
Tu 9:35 - 12:30 W* Scott
W 10:10 - 1:10 X* Scott
Sat 1:00 - 4:00 V* Michael

Preparation: Homework is intended as preparation for experiments. You must read the manual and try to understand the experiment. This will take several hours, because it is difficult to convey an experiment in words and diagrams. It is very difficult to complete an experiment if you do not prepare. You may fill in the answers to questions which can be done without using the experimental apparatus. However, if you bring into the lab answers to questions which require the apparatus, you will be reported as having cheated.

Grades:
30% Exam1 weeks 7,8
30% Exam2 weeks 9,10
30% Experiments
10% Homework
Grades will be posted on the www, using secret code numbers.

Exams: There will be two exams, held during normal lab periods in weeks 7-10. We will give you questions, which you should answer using apparatus, and writing a description of what you are doing and the results. We expect that each exam will take about 40 minutes. You will work alone, under normal exam conditions (no talking, no books).

Experiment 5 will be spread over weeks 7-10. You will begin experiment 5 after the first exam (weeks 7,8), then finish it after the second one, two weeks later (weeks 9,10).

Sections I,J,S, and T: Sections S and T coincide with a holiday monday May 25. They should come instead on June 1, at 4pm. Sections I and J will leave the lab after their exam at 3:50pm. These sections will have less time to work on experiment 5 on June 1.

Homework: Complete 3 homeworks. Experiments 1,2,4 (not 3, and not 5 because exams those weeks). Hand in homework at the start of the appropriate lab. No homework is due during the exam weeks (7-10). We will grade a minimum of one question from each homework.

Experiments: Use a pen (not pencil) to complete the lab manual for each each experiment. Otherwise, we can not consider regrades. Leave your completed manual behind in the lab when complete each 3 hour experiment. Make sure that the TA records that you have handed in a manual. We will grade only some of the questions which you answer, to save time and help balance the totals for all experiments. There are 5 experiments in the manual. Experiment 1 is not graded. We will not do experiment 3, and use the time saved to hold exams in weeks 7-10. Hence only three experiments will be graded. You may need your lab manual for revision for the exam.
