Week 5: Waves I Chapter 17

Facts you may need for the Quiz:
The terms and jargon. (i.e. wavelength, frequency).
The realtionship between wavelenght, frequency, and speed.
The difference between a standing wave and a traveling wave.
Do NOT worry about phasors. They are not that useful.

Concept-tests:
5.1 Move a line

5.2 Wave pulse carries

5.3 Wave Speed

5.4 Adding Sine Waves--superposition look at Fig 17-11 in book

5.5 Length of Guitar String

Answers to Concept Tests

Demos:
SLINKY--A long coiled metal "string", used to demonstrate both traveling waves and standing waves. As the tension is increased the speed of the traveling waves increases. For standing waves both an increase in tension and a decrease in length lead to a higher frequency fundamental mode.

Sonometer--like a guitar string. Change length and tension to change frequency.

Fourier Synthesizer--interference and Fourier decomposition.
