Patterned Electrical Activity

Traveling Electrical Waves in Cortex

In studies aimed at delineating the nature of coherent electrical activity in normal brain function, we previously identified both plane (figure) and rotating waves in sensory areas of non-mammalian cortex. We further examined the theoretical basis of such waves in terms of networks of weakly coupled phase oscillators.

Future experiments will address macroscopic patterns of electrical activity within trigeminal brainstem regions and sensorimotor cortical regions that comprise the rat vibrissa system. These experiments will make use of optical techniques in conjunction with brainstem slice and multi-electrode recording techniques in conjunction with behaving animals.
